There are many ways to express your ideas— writing, drawing, music, and playing sports are some.  There are also many ways of seeing things.  This is what makes the world interesting-different viewpoints and ideas.  Sculpture is a visual art in three dimensions-height, width and depth.  It is done by modeling, the adding of material to build up the piece, or by carving, the taking away of material.

Clay, which we will use,  unlike stone,  is very forgiving because you can always correct what you want to. My role as an instructor  besides  teaching techniques, is to help inspire my students to bring out their creativity and gain confidence in themselves.

This is an on-going weekly  clay sculpture class which runs year round and charged monthly. You can join the classes anytime and all levels are welcome.  You registration continues monthly basis and if you plan to discontinue, notify  Bob a month ahead  so your spot can be provided to waitlist candidates, if any.

A sculptor may have different aims-to amuse, make a point and/or bring forth an emotional response.  In doing so he/she may try  for natural representation, distortion, stylization or abstraction.  I will emphasize techniques that enable students to carry  forth their ideas.  Design involves making sure the piece can stand on its own, has balance and economy of line and form.  Learning how to use light and shade is a key component of sculpture.

Making a sculpture is an exciting experience.  A sculptor must look at her/his sculpture from different angles while doing sculpting in the round.  You can find out a lot about yourself by how you work.  Be yourself and your style will develop.  Relax and have fun!

Here are some of the areas our ongoign Sculpting Classes capture.

  • Creating low reliefs- a relief is a combination of drawing and sculpture in which the sculpted parts are bonded to a solid background of the same material.
  • Creating higher reliefs-is more like sculpture in the round, in that more of the mass of the     sculpted parts are above the surface.
  •  Sculpt animals-  If you have a special animal in mind, bring pictures taken from different   angles.
  • Making masks out of clay—helpful as a process to sculpting faces
  •  Faces in relief-also helpful to learning to sculpt in the round
  •  Faces in the round—understanding proportions. And how the parts relate
  • Sculpting People:  famous or not so famous people of your choice
  • Caricatures-comically exaggerate features
