Summer Camps offer Week-Long or Extended Class sessions of Creativity

Summer camps vary from 4 to 5-day classes and a month of Tuesday-Thursday classes. Camps offer extended experiences with creativity and a variety of creative media including pottery, painting, drawing, etc. All camps are located at the McKinney Art House.

Jump Into Art Day Camp

Arts and Crafts Day Camps 2015: $325 - Save 10% Book by March 31, 2015

Camp sessions run from 9:00am – 4:00pm Monday through Friday (and earlier/later options available).
Ages: For kids 6 - 13*, this creative arts camp is perfect for the child interested in art or crafts (no need for great "talent") because we blend terrific projects each week with traditional camp games, activities such as local walking field trips for food art and more! Art Projects always include creating clay creations, the ever popular pottery wheel, learning new and amazing art techniques from visiting local artists (water color, print making, mosaic tiling and the art of doodling). Our campers return year after year and say, "This is the best week of my life!"

Optional Early Drop Off (8:00am) and Late Pick Up (5:00pm) available for $40 per option.
*13 years and older may wish to join our CIT (Counselor in Training) Program - which teaches the how to's of helping and interacting with younger campers. This program lets older camper help, assist and contribute to the success of our camp. Fee is reduced $50.

June 8-12, 2015

Wearable Art: 9:00am–4:00pm

Kids 6-13
This special week focuses on the fantastical and enchanting things we can create and wear! This year we will learn origami, create clay beads, try our hand at glass slumping, make tie dyed shirts or bags plus play with clay, the pottery wheel and more. We will head into historic downtown McKinney to visit Snug On The Square for creating interesting edible creations. Picture an action packed week of creative art, having fun and making new friends!

June 15-19, 2015

My Great Earth: 9:00am–4:00pm

Kids 6-13
This special week focuses on how everything is related to our wonderful earth and how we, as artists can use clay, paint, wood, flowers and leaves, paper and shells for one of a kind works of art. This year we will use interesting materials for mosaic tiling, decorating wooden houses, try our hand at print making, clay masks and the always popular pottery wheel. We will head into historic downtown McKinney for a wonderful and tasty food art craft at McKinney's Sweet Spot, yum! This week is a crowd pleaser.

June 22-26, 2015

Artist's Choice: 9:00am–4:00pm

Kids 6-13
This slower paced week allows the artist to pick and choose projects they enjoy and omit others that don't interest them. A great week for children that prefer spending longer time on painting, sculpting, creating and more. This year we will focus on techniques with water color, colored pencils and doodling. We will head into historic Chestnut Square for an interesting tour of the old school house and try our hand at ice cream making! Loads of fun.

Construction and Color with Picasso and Matisse: 9:00-11:30am

Ages K-6th Grade
Matisse and Picasso, two 20th century giants, are at the core of this art and learning experience. Using a variety of media (paint, collage, sculpture), we will create our own expressive explorations of patterned compositions, Fauvist landscapes, and Cubist abstractions. ($90.)

Teen Art Intensive – Drawing and Painting: 6:30pm-8:30pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays during July

8 classes

For young people entering 6th through 12th grades, beginners through advanced art students welcome.
The focus will be on a disciplined approach to drawing several different types of subjects (objects), including the live models (clothed). Students will be exposed to a variety of drawing media. Students may choose to work part of the time on rendering in paint on canvas or panel what they have studied in drawing. Makeup classes are available for those who must miss scheduled classes. Color and Narrative with Marc Chagall: 9:00-11:30am

Ages K-6th Grade
Marc Chagall’s individuality and life narrative fills every one of his works of art. He worked in an amazing array of media, including paint, sculpture, print-making, stained glass, mosaic, and (little known) the written word. Everyone has a story, and young children find art the easiest way to express it. Chagall’s autobiographical art will serve as an inspiration as we make art that is personally meaningful. Students choose projects in these media: paint, print-making, collage, clay, and masks. ($90.)

Illustrate a Story Art Camp: 1:00-2:30pm

Age: 8 and up
Cost: $80 plus $30 supply fee (please email Noriko if you already own a colored pencil set)
Instructor: Noriko DeWitt
What is it like to be an illustrator of a children’s book? Learn how to make your picture worth a thousand words! In this fun and creative camp we will stretch our imagination to create story-telling artwork based on the story read in class using colored pencils. Lots of reference images will be provided to help create the scene. We will learn the basics of using colored pencils and how to layer colors. All drawing skills welcome. Supply fee includes your own set of 24-color artist-grade colored pencils, art eraser set and a drawing board so students can continue drawing throughout the summer!

Origami Camp: 1:30-3:00pm

Ages: 8 and up
Cost: $100 includes all supplies

Let’s learn the traditional paper folding art from Japan! All skill levels welcome. We start our camp off with a giant Samurai hat and decorate it. Yes, it is big enough for you to wear it! Each day we will make 2 to 3 different origami creations based on a theme (animals, botanicals, transportation, etc.). Every student receives a 100 sheet origami paper set and step-by-step illustrated instruction guide for all projects done in the class so students can share their origami skills with family and friends.
